Stalis (or Stalida as it’s locally known) is a great choice for your holiday destination but why not hire a car to get to some of those famous and beautiful sights of Crete, whether it’s Crete Archaeology or the many beaches on Crete. When choosing you car hire in Stalis make sure you pop along to see Yiannis and Billy at Stalis Motors for competitive deals on all vehicles. All cars are brand new and include full insurance, together with excellent service. Yiannis and Billy are locals and are passionate about the island of Crete, so feel free to ask them about it. In the meantime, some ideas for exploring Crete are here !
Whilst out and about driving in Crete you might want to visit the famous archaeological site Knossos Palace which is very well signposted from the National Road of Crete, a few kilometers inland from the City of Heraklion, then with a few hours to spare, why not go into the City to the Archaeology Museum and for great shopping in Heraklion City Centre, mingling with the Cretan locals on market street, or if you need to chill out after learning about the Minoan Civilization then head down to the sandy beach of Ammoudara for some chill out time before driving back to Stalis.
For another amazing day out to head up into the Dikti Mountains. You will find you are driving on excellent roads despite the feeling of being “off the beaten track”. From Stalis there are several car hire routes that take you up towards the Lassithi Plateau, whichever way you go, make sure you return a different way. There are many villages on Crete and you will pass through quite a few, make sure to have a Greek coffee with the locals. When up on the Lassithi Plateau, take time to climb a short way up the Mountain to the Cave of Zeus where legend has it Zeus was born.
For the shoppers, get in your hire car and head towards the East of Crete to Aghios Nicholaos, but first maybe take a detour towards Elounda and Plaka where you can take a boat over to the Island of Spinalonga, famous for the Venetian Fortress and the Leper Colony. Then head to the cosmopolitan town of Aghios Nicholaos for shopping, picking up some souvenirs of your holiday on Crete. A definite must is to have at least a coffee, if not lunch, by the side of Voulismeni Lake before heading back to chill out on Stalis beach.
On the South of Crete, there is more to see and a great drive over the mountains. Have a dip in the Libyan Sea and chill out time at the Hippie resort of Matala, where the hippies in the fifties and sixties used to live by the beach in the caves. Nearby is also the ancient City of Faistos with fantastic views of the surrounding area and time for lunch in the sleepy Cretan hamlet of Aghios Ioannis before driving back through one of the longest villages of Crete, Aghia Varvara.
Whatever your wish for your car hire on Crete, feel rest assured that the roads are very good, the main one being the National Road going from East Crete to West Crete, so the whole of Crete is at your fingertips, from the Capital of Crete, Heraklion to the famous Venetian Harbour of Chania. So go and have a chat with the guys at Stalis Motors, situated on the beach road in the centre of Stalis and get some more great ideas of what independent excursions you can do during your holiday on Crete.
